Truffles are a group of mycorrhizal fungi that grow in association with tree roots. Nut-sized balls with creamy marbled centers are harvested at peak ripeness below the soil surface in the fall. So flavorful and treasured, truffles are often shaved to add to dishes to impart their rich taste and aroma. The Burgundy Truffle, Tuber aestivum, has a very broad climactic tolerance but produce best where their host trees, Burr Oak and American Hazelnut, will thrive. We recommend planting the Burgundy Truffle trees anywhere east of the Mississippi River and north of the Deep South where proper soil preparation and site selection have been adhered to. The host seedling trees, sold as bare root whips, are guaranteed to have the Tuber aestivum fungus established in the root system. Trees are sold in sets of 4 to provide the necessary mating types for truffle production and should be planted together. While the trees are guaranteed to be colonized by the ectomycorrhizae of the Burgundy Truffle, there is no guarantee that truffles will be produced under any particular tree. Trees are shipped March/April, depending upon the spring season. We will notify the purchaser of exact shipping times. Trees must be planted within 1 week of arrival.
