Description
Softball-sized clusters with cascading long spines make this Hericium one of the most breathtaking mushrooms. Lion's Mane has received attention in recent years for its neurotrophic capabilities, which may help keep our brains strong. While Lion's Mane grown on sawdust blocks can sometimes be slightly bitter, its log-grown counterpart is almost always sweet and succulent.
What is Lion's Mane Mushroom Spawn & How do I Use It?
Lion's Mane sawdust spawn is a type of spawn where sawdust is used as the carrier for Lion's Mane mycelium. The end user (you!) uses this spawn to inoculate hardwood logs.
Species: Hericium erinaceus, commonly known as Lion's Mane
Spawn Type: Sawdust Spawn
Coverage: one 5lb. bag Lion's Mane mushroom spawn plants 12-16 logs
Best Wood Types: Beech, Birch, Sugar Maple, Hackberry, Mulberry
Patience is required for growing Lion's Mane on logs, which often takes two years for fruiting to begin. Lion's Mane sawdust spawn can be used via the standard "drill and fill" method as used for shiitake cultivation; however, an increasingly promising method is the "totem method," used on larger diameter rounds (especially on beech and other medium-hard/medium-soft hardwoods). One 5 lb. bag of sawdust spawn will inoculate 15 logs (4" dia. x 40" length) using the drill-and-fill method, or 6 totems (2-logs high). Instructions for both methods are included in order.

- When is the best time to plant Lion's Mane mushrooms?
- The timing is flexible, but ideally should be done 2-8 weeks after harvesting dormant-cut wood
- What time of year does Lion's Mane typically fruit?
- Typically, Lion's Mane will fruit during the summer months to early Fall (in the Midwest, we see it in the time between June and September)
- Why does my Lion's Mane spawn look less colonized than other varieties?
- Lion's Mane mycelium is finer than other mushroom mycelium, leading to a more "raw" appearance to the spawn.
