Sawdust spawn consists of mycelium grown into hardwood sawdust and is the preferred spawn of many commercial growers for growing Shiitake, Oyster, Nameko, Lion's Mane, Comb Tooth, Maitake, Chicken of the Woods, Brick Cap, Chestnut, Wood Ear, and Turkey Tail mushrooms on logs. A faster spawn run makes sawdust spawn more economical to use than plug spawn. Because sawdust spawn is sensitive to drying out and must be kept moist throughout the inoculation process, each inoculation site should be immediately sealed with wax (we use melted cheese wax) or a foam cap.
