Truffle Trees (seedling sets)
Oak and Hazelnut seedling sets for aspiring truffle growers in the Great Lakes, Midwest and Northeast regions. Tree seedlings are guaranteed to have the Burgundy truffle (Tuber aestivum) established in the roots. Key points to note before purchasing:
• Truffle trees of this species of truffle takes 5+ years to start bearing truffles
• Trees are small, so make sure they have adequate protection from browsing critters (and string trimmers)
• Maintenance is required of your orchard; soil often needs liming to adjust pH prior to planting and trees need to be kept weed free or mowed
• Trees need access to water, especially during establishment
• Trees are best planted in sets to increase the likelihood of mating to produce a truffle (preferably at least 4 )
• Larger planting for a true truffle orchard (20 or more trees) will likely require a truffle dog to help sniff out the full harvest… don’t worry, you have time to train your pup, especially if it responds to smells
This year we are offering an additional tree species, the Siberian Hazelnut (Corylus heterophylla) which produces a larger nut than the American Hazelnut. While we recommend that these be planted as an add-on to a set of 4 Oak and American Hazelnut, they can be purchased in sets of 2 for a modest and edible orchard.
Seedling Set Pricing (includes shipping within the continental US):
TRUF-4 Set of 4 (2 American Hazelnut (Corylus americana), 2 Oak (Quercus robur): $250
TRUF-10 Set of 10 (4 American Hazelnut - Corylus americana, 4 Oak - Quercus robur, 2 Siberian Hazelnut - Corylus heterophylla): $570
